Gear milling

Milling is a process of cutting in a limited way to manufacture prototype individual gears or gear very small batches, as it is a very slow and uneconomic production. A milling cutter of involute form, which has the profile of the space between the gears is used to remove the material between the teeth of the gear blank on a horizontal milling machine. The depth of cut in the gear blank depends on the shear strength, rigidity and machinability configuration of workpiece material gear.

Generation Gear Planing or rack

This is used for medium volume production. A rack, which can be considered as an infinite radius gear is used as the cutter. Built with hardened steel cutting edges around the borders teeth. Zipper given laterial reciprocal movement equal to the velocity of the pitch line gearis fed slowly to the gear blank which rotates slowly. Thus, the material between the teeth and removed the involute teeth are generated.

This is the most productive of all gear production processes. However, only can be used to produce spur gears and worn gears. It can be used to cut internal gears and can not work up to his shoulder.


The hob is used to generate the involute teeth here. The counter is essentially a straight cylindrical tool around which a wire with the same cross section as the toothed rack is wrapped helically. This hob is then as the rack is moved laterally
